Review: Nighty Night, Sleepy Sleeps

I received my copy of Nighty Night, Sleepy Sleeps by Brian Anderson the other day. I ordered it months ago when I heard it was going to be produced. Brian Anderson is the creator, writer and artist of the web comic Dog Eat Doug. This book is full of colorful paintings of Doug and Sophie as they crash about the house avoiding going to sleep at night. The story is light but cute and the images are wonderful.

Read to Me Dad Ratings

Story – Good – A cute little story about a boy and his dog trying to avoid going to bed.
Re-Read-ability – Good – It is quick and simple with some beautiful artwork.
Illustrations – Excellent – These painted pages are a wonderful way in which to be introduced to Sophie and Doug. They are so cute.
Message – No real message here just a cute story about a boy and his dog avoiding going to bed.
Plot – A baby and puppy are avoiding being put to bed.
Characters – Sophie and Doug are adorable. They get into lots of trouble while they avoid being put down for sleep.
Does Eva Like It – Eva loved the photos.
Recommended Ages – 4-8, very family friendly.

Happy Birthday Eva!

My Daughter Eva turned One today. In a whirlwind year this kid went from laying around not doing much of anything to being the queen butt scootah of the house. Really, she took the title from Allison in a heated race. And with any birthday it is time to celebrate. We celebrated by taking Eva to Red Robin for her 1st solid meal sans any baby food. She had apples slices and half a burger. I helped her out with the other half. She even had a bit of a fry minus the Fry Sauce that I made.

The image above is from Brian Anderson of Dog Eat Doug. I did a review of his comic compilation and he sent me this sketch for Eva’s Birthday. What a great guy.

Review: Dog Eat Doug Book

The other day I received my copy of Dog eat Doug: It’s a Good Thing They’re Cute. Dog eat Doug is a web comic that is making a foothold into newspapers all over the US. Brian Anderson writes and draws the comic every day. He posts them to his blog at Dog eat Doug Comic. The book is a collection of comics from the very first year of Dog eat Doug. I’ve been a fan for a long time and have caught every strip. It should be your daily read and this book is certainly a great start to getting to know the strip.

Read to Me Dad Ratings

Story – Good – The story is one that parents can certainly relate to. Very enjoyable.
Re-Read-ability – Excellent – The humor and heart of this book is evident on every page. You will laugh with every read.
Illustrations – Excellent – Anderson has a very clean style to his artwork and it is so consistent too. The book is full color which is a big plus.
Message – The lighter side of being a parent to a puppy and a baby boy.
Plot – A puppy adjusts to life with a new baby in the house. The two, Sophie and Doug, have many household adventures.
Characters – Sophie and Doug are adorable and they are occasionally joined by other characters from time to time. The comic strip does mainly focus on Sophie and Doug.
Does Eva Like It – Eva is a little young for it now but I did show her pictures.
Recommended Ages – Probably 8 and Up, very family friendly.
