For the past couple of months I’ve been part of a team of Dads who were creating a brand new blog called Dad Revolution. We were supposed to launch back on April 1st but that didn’t happen. We needed a few more tweaks to get the site ready. I’m glad too that it wasn’t launched that day because for too long Dads have been seen as the joke. In movies, on TV and comic strips Dad is the bumbling buffoon. I joined Dad Revolution to help put a stop to that stereotype of the inept, pratfalling moron or worse the Dad that sneaks off and avoids helping his wife and spending time with his kids.

Each one of the “revolutionaries” has his own reason for being a part of the team, take a look at our new blog http://dadrevolution.com/

My friend Kevin Metzger of My Spelling Sucks has just launched a new blog and a new podcast. I was part of Kevin’s first ever podcast and it was a great time. Kevin is launching DADvocates. DADvocates is a great project where Kevin is searching for a better definition of today’s Dads.

I love this from Kevin.

“DADvocates – Today’s dads are a new generation of dads and while I don’t think we have a great definition, I believe we are finding ways to be more involved in family life. We are doing jobs that allow us to be home more and we are finding ways to be more present when participating in family activities. We help drive parenting decisions that were previously made by women and we are not the Peter Griffins that dads are portrayed as on TV.”

Form me there are no TV role models for Dads out there right now. I can’t think of one Dad on TV or in movies that make me proud. Dad’s in the media are portrayed as morons or people who avoid time with their family. However, that is not the kid of Dad I am and also it is not the type of Dad that many of my friends are.

Kevin is looking to get 1000 people to take his DADvocates survey. He’s had 108 take it so far so he is a 10th of the way there. Can you please take this quick survey to help him with this project. http://www.TheDADvocateProject.com

4 months and no update, man I am sorry about that. I have no one to blame but myself for not updating. I’ll be updating this site more. I have some ideas that I’ve been toying with and so you will see more content here, not every day however but I’ll try for no more 4 month gaps in the writing.

Eva is now interested in TV shows and one of her favorites and mine actually is Sid the Science Kid on PBS Kids.

The basic format of the show. We see Sid observe something and ask a question about it. It can be why breathing is important, how does your stomach break down food or where does the wind come from. Sid is a colorful show with a very predicative format.

Sid asks a question

Sid and his Mom or Dad explore that question a bit

Sid goes to School

Sid is looking for his friends

Sid polls his friends about his question.

Teacher Suzy is prepared to talk about the question that Sid has that day
(She’s an awesome teacher who can whip out lesson plans at a moment’s notice.)

The kids experiment on that question

Sid goes home with his Grandma

Sid talks with his family

Sid gives you his ooper-dooper-schmoorper-Big-Idea at the end of the show.

I love this show, I love singing along with the repetitive parts and I like how intelligent this show treats that kids. They explore the questions that Sid has and kids are full of questions so I can see why this is popular.
You can watch Sid The Science Kid Videos on PBSKids.org.

You can extend the Sid The Science Kid experience by going online and playing at PBSKids.org. There are downloadable Sid The Science Kid coloring pages and many other fun things to do.

Check out Sid the Science Kid, a great kids show.

Kyle and Brady Baldwin are brothers and Eagle Scouts. They were recently featured in one of those weekend magazines that come in the newspaper. These two brothers started a program called My Own Book. The program gives books to kids who may have never owned a book in their life. I just can’t imagine not having books. But these kids have note a single book in their lives.

Kyle and Brady Baldwin saw that a cycle of illiteracy needed to be stopped and that would start with children. By giving children their very own book talking to them about the library and speaking in classrooms they got kids excited. And then Kyle and Brady got more people excited about this project by doing book drives, asking for donations from publishers and writing for grants. They have also created a website called www.myownbook.net. The website has links to what the two are doing and also how to start your own chapter of the program.

I think this is a fantastic program and I thought about trying to do something similar with new fathers at the hospital. Gathering books for new dads so that they would have some special books to read to their kids. Who kows maybe I could still do something like that.
